Building on a Sensitive Coastal Site
Construction of a 12,500-square-foot public exploration and education center for the City of Santa Cruz, located on the Santa Cruz Wharf. The project required careful coordination to meet environmental regulations and sustainability goals on a sensitive coastal site.
Challenge
The City of Santa Cruz and NOAA needed a builder capable of delivering a coastal project subject to strict environmental regulations and ambitious sustainability goals. The site demanded care: complex permitting, multiple funding sources, and a design that had to perform as well as it inspired.
Approach
Bogard addressed regulatory requirements, sustainability objectives, and site constraints early in the process. Permitting coordination, LEED documentation, and construction planning were managed in parallel to keep compliance aligned with schedule and cost.
Throughout construction, steady field supervision and close coordination with agency partners and trade teams helped resolve issues early and maintain progress on a highly visible coastal site.
Result
The Exploration Center achieved LEED Gold certification and incorporates solar panels, natural ventilation, FSC-certified wood siding, and a rainwater recycling system.
