Expanding Food Access for Santa Cruz Seniors
Design-build renovation of an existing warehouse into a new food distribution and community facility for Grey Bears, a Santa Cruz nonprofit that provides nutritious food and community support to local seniors. The project includes a commercial kitchen, expanded refrigeration and storage, improved loading areas, and flexible multipurpose space.
Challenge
Grey Bears needed to convert a neighboring warehouse into a facility supporting food preparation, cold storage, distribution, and community use. The renovation required specialized kitchen and refrigeration systems, along with new power, lighting, mechanical, accessibility, and fire-life-safety improvements.
Approach
Through a design-build agreement, Bogard’s involvement included a comprehensive preconstruction process, working with Grey Bears and the design team to align the facility’s layout, specialized equipment and building systems before construction. The team coordinated the commercial kitchen, prefabricated cooler and freezer, loading and storage areas, and multipurpose space within the existing building.
Result
Once complete, the renovated facility will bring food preparation, storage, distribution, and community programming together under one roof. The new space will improve operational efficiency while providing Grey Bears with a better-equipped, more welcoming environment to serve local seniors.
