Our story is one of innovation, perseverance, and family values passed down through four generations. From humble beginnings, we have become a trusted name in the region, with each decade reflecting our ongoing dedication to excellence and community.

1947–1959

The Foundation of Integrity

Bogard Construction began with a leap of faith, a 1947 Oldsmobile, and $2,000 in savings. After serving in the Navy during World War II, Victor F. Bogard Sr. moved his family west to Santa Cruz, where he purchased a single lot on Opal Cliffs Drive and built his first home. Impressed by the craftsmanship, a neighbor immediately commissioned a second—and our business was born. By the mid-1950s, a landmark handshake partnership with Louis Rittenhouse led to the development of the Westlake area, where Vic Sr. built over 500 homes and permanently cemented the Bogard name as a symbol of local quality.
Shaping the Civic Heart

As Santa Cruz entered a new era of progress, Bogard evolved alongside it by expanding beyond residential construction to shape the civic and spiritual heart of the region. We built the foundational churches and schools that anchored a rapidly growing community. When UC Santa Cruz opened its doors in this decade, we proved our technical prowess by constructing the landmark Applied Sciences building. This massive engineering triumph required drilling 100-foot-deep piers through unstable limestone caves, permanently establishing our reputation for mastering the Central Coast’s most demanding sites.

1960–1969
1970–1979

Setting Roots in Healthcare and Education

Building upon the technical victories of the previous decade, Bogard solidified its place as the region’s premier institutional builder. This era marked our vital entry into the healthcare sector, highlighted by foundational work at Dominican Hospital and major academic milestones at UC Santa Cruz, including Kresge College. The 1970s also marked a pivotal family milestone as additional second-generation members of the Bogard family officially joined the company. Their arrival brought fresh energy to our operations, ensuring the company was well-positioned to bridge the gap between high-stakes medical facilities and innovative educational campuses.
Regional Powerhouse and High-Tech Growth

During a period of regional transformation, the legacy expanded as the first members of the third generation joined the company. Under this combined leadership, Bogard evolved into a sophisticated general contractor capable of delivering complex, multi-million-dollar complexes. We demonstrated incredible versatility by constructing high-tech manufacturing facilities such as Seagate Technology alongside enduring cultural anchors such as the McPherson Center for Art and History. While our footprint extended across Northern California and into Central Colorado, our foundational family values remained firmly at the core of every project.

1980–1989
1990–1999

Technological Evolution & Leadership Expansion

As the century drew to a close, additional members of the third generation joined the ranks, expanding our leadership team and guiding the company into a digital era. This decade was defined by the rapid adoption of early computer-aided building technologies and modern, collaborative project delivery methods. We aggressively modernized our field operations while maintaining a steady hand on major regional infrastructure, healthcare expansions, and commercial centers. Even as our methodologies grew more advanced, we proudly upheld the hands-on, deeply invested approach that Vic Sr. valued from day one.
Specialized Construction Management

With the third generation actively driving executive leadership, Bogard formalized its specialized Construction Management division. This milestone allowed us to offer clients a unique value proposition: combining the strategic oversight of a project manager with the practical, real-world perspective of a builder. Our work during this decade focused heavily on state-of-the-art medical offices, thriving retail hubs, and critical civic spaces essential to the growing population. This period proved that our sophisticated corporate capabilities would always coexist with our identity as a deeply rooted family business.

2000–2009
2010–2019

Sustainable Mastery

Marking over 70 years of service and the fourth generation joining our ranks, this decade saw Bogard emerge as a regional leader in green building practices and sustainable development. As proud members of the US Green Building Council, we actively integrated LEED strategies into our multi-residential, institutional, and commercial pipelines. We embraced sophisticated paradigms such as Lean Construction and a wide array of delivery methods to master increasingly complex supply chains and navigate modern regulatory challenges. By combining these advanced techniques, we delivered highly efficient, forward-thinking structures that respected both our clients’ budgets and the local environment.
